Roaring Report - November 18, 2024

Dear Lincoln Middle School Community,

It’s officially fall and we have had two months of school completed already. During that time, we’ve had opportunities to celebrate learning, citizenship and attendance in our grade levels, earn Lincoln Bucks to visit the school store, join clubs and sports and engage in team building experiences with our partners, Rippleffect.

Here are updates for you:

Cellphones

We can also feel the change in our students’ responsibility with cell phones. This has been a community effort and over all, students have been receptive to this change with an increased focus on learning and academics. Please continue to discuss this at home as needed and remember that if students need to reach out to a family member, we have phones in our office that they can use. I also encourage you to regularly check in with your pre-teen about healthy habits with screens and social media.

Attendance

I really appreciate the communication from students and families about when and why your child will be out. It is extremely important for students to be in school everyday. With our goal of continuing to increase the rigor of academics and developing a healthy culture and climate in our school, it is important for students to be in school regularly so that they feel like they are part of our community. Please note that if your child is missing school for more than 2 days, they are at risk of becoming truant. If they become truant, then the school will take corrective action to ensure students are in school and that families are supported. Please work with us by reaching out to our attendance coordinator, Ms. Mazjanis and secretaries, Ms. Yeo and Mr. Wales,  if you have any questions or concerns.

Grades & Conferences

We are getting close to our conference dates, which are December 10 and 11, 2024. Please be on the lookout for communication from Case Managers and Pride Teachers on how to schedule a block of time. This is at the end of our first trimester, so it will be important for families to be aware of how your child is doing in school, celebrate and pivot when necessary.  We encourage students to strive for 3s or better across the board! We know our kids can do it, so long they have the support from their community!

Clubs & Sports

Please be mindful that participation in extracurricular activities is contingent on being a responsible student in our school. Student-Athletes, please remember that if there are any infractions, this can impact your participation in practices and/or games.

Here are two asks for families and students that will continue to move our work forward:

  1. I’ve noticed that there have been students who are using hurtful language, to the point where it has become racist or homophobic. It is really easy to give in to peer pressure at times, and what we need to do is remember that we are part of a community and that our words have a deep impact on who we are. Families, I am encouraging you to have candid conversations with your students in regard to overtly racist and homophobic language, but also, with more subtle yet still hurtful ways this type of language exists in our students’ vocabularies. Students, I am encouraging you to rise to the occasion and become aware of how you are communicating with your peers and friends. Students from different backgrounds and belief systems have a right to a public education and a space that is safe. Please be respectful and mindful of this.
  2. Encourage your child to get chores done around the house if you haven’t done so already! There is enough research to support that children who partake in caring for their home show increased self-esteem, higher levels of responsibility and the ability to problem solve. These positive effects impact how they carry themselves in school and help us create a cohesive community.

I greatly appreciate your partnership and the continued collaboration In partnership,

Principal Ayala
