Summary: This memoir is of a 13 year old Jew and her family who lived in Czechoslovakia. When World War II comes they must live in a ghetto with other families, because at the time, Jews were hated and discriminated against, for no good reason. This living is only temporary, because the people of the ghetto finds out that they are going to a “labor camp.” But really they end up going to a tragic, unsafe, scary, torturing, unforgettable, unpredictable concentration camp, Auschwitz. This is when the terror and torture begins. Ellike goes through blistering hot sun, a big change in her appearance, and lots of pain. Although Ellike sticks with her mother, most of the time, this adventure is extremely frightening.

Review: This was a very well written memoir, with excitement, sadness, pain, and eventually, liberation and relief. This is not, however a happy story. It is a true, depressing story of tortured people. In this book I could picture  clear visuals of all the tragic events, as if i was there. If you are looking for a realistic story that lets you know what really happened in the Holocaust, and how people really felt through it, this is a book for you!
